Many global cities such as Amsterdam, Paris and Copenhagen have well established bike networks. Others, like London and New York are rapidly expanding theirs.
In Sydney, we have taken the experiences from all these cities to develop a bike network that is specifically catered to meet the needs of our own city.
Safety is paramount to increasing the number of bike riders. Separated cycleways give bike riders their own lane separate from motor traffic. This makes the road safer for all road users.
Our cycleways are designed to be easy-to-use, convenient and above all safe.
More people are riding more often – the facts:
- More than 1.2 million bicycles were sold in Australia in 2008 – double the number 10 years ago, and more than the number of cars sold every year.
- 85 per cent of people say that they would be more likely to take up cycling or ride more often if a safe cycleway network was provided.
- The number of bike riders commuting to work has increased 37 per cent in five years.
- An Inner Sydney Regional Bike Network will increase bike rider number a further 66 per cent by 2016 alone.
