Traffic congestion is rising. That means that if you drive, you'll be spending even more time stuck in traffic.
Want some good traffic news? Cycleways will give people another transport option that will make a difference and will help you get home faster – even if you'll never ride a bike.
That's because every extra bike mean less car traffic, more seats on public transport and a quicker journey for everyone.
Currently, about 1 per cent of all trips in the city are made on bicycle. By providing a safe and convenient network of cycleways, we aim to raise this figure to 10 per cent by 2016.
That's good news for everyone trying to get home a little faster.
Easing traffic congestion - the facts:
- Traffic levels are forecast to rise 23 per cent over the next 15 years.
- More than 50 per cent of all car trips are less than 5km – this is 15 minutes on a bicycle.
- 1.35 million Australians make car journeys to work of less than 5 kilometres.
- An Inner Sydney Regional Bike Network* will create:
- A 66 per cent increase in people riding bikes by 2016 alone.
- Congestion savings of $97.8 million (from increased bike use).
- More seats available on public transport.
