Light the City FAQ's

Where do I enter the event?

The entry point and ride both begin at the start of Mrs Macquaries Road (see our map above). Mrs Macquaries Road will be closed to cars during the event.

Please arrive via Art Gallery Road.

On arrival at the event, please follow instructions from the event staff.

Our event marshals are there to make sure everyone has a great night, please follow their instructions.

Riders are required to travel in one direction (the same as the cars that normally use the road).

The outdoor lounge at Mrs Macquaries Point will be open from 6pm. You can ride the 2.5km loop as many times as you like while you are at the event.


How much does it cost?

It’s free. You can also purchase food and drink on the night. Please note that there is no ATM in the event site, so please bring cash for food and drink from the food trucks and cafe at the outdoor lounge (allow between $15 and $20 person).


How can I get there?

Naturally, it’s best if you arrive by bike! Plan your journey using the Sydney cycling map.

Bikes aren’t allowed on buses, so if it’s too far to ride, we suggest catching a train.

Bikes are allowed on trains free of charge on weekends and the closest train station is St James.

Another option is catching the bus and hiring a bike on the night. You can plan your journey at


Can I drive and park there?

For those coming from further away, the Domain car park is the closest to the event.


Can I hire a bike?

Yes, bike hire will be available on the night at a cost of $15 per 30 minutes. Helmets are provided.

There will be a selected range of bicycles to choose from, including electric-bikes.


Do I have to register?

No, there is no need to register for the event. You can turn up anytime between 6pm and 11pm to enjoy the ride and outdoor lounge.


Who can take part? Is it all ages?

Light the City is an all age’s event and open to everyone. If you don’t have a bike and want to join in the ride, you can always hire one on the night.


Can I dress up? What should I wear?

Of course! We encourage you to decorate and light your bike in all types of creative ways.


Can I buy food and drink there? Can I bring my own?

Yes, you can buy food and drink from the food trucks at the event. Eat Art Truck, Street Sliders, Mama Linhs and De Waffle food trucks will be serving on the night.

You are also more than welcome to bring your own food and drinks, but there is strictly no alcohol or glass allowed at the event.


What can I do with my bike when I stop at the outdoor lounge?

There will be free bike valet parking on the night, so your bike is secure.

Follow the signs and instructions from event staff and park your bike in the secure compound. You will be provided a ticket when you are ready to collect. Easy!


Does my bike need special lights or other equipment to take part?

As a minimum, and by law, your bike should have a steady or flashing white light at the front and red light at the back.

You should also have a bell, to alert people when you’re coming up behind them.

Please also wear bright, reflective clothing to ensure maximum visibility (especially if you are riding to and from the event).


I don’t want to ride so can I walk the event?

Yes, you can.

Footpaths along Mrs Macquaries Road will be remain open to those who want to walk. Follow instructions from route marshals and only cross the road at designated crossings along the course for your own safety.


Can I skateboard, scooter or rollerblade?

No. Skateboards, scooters and rollerblades will not be permitted into the event.


Will it still go ahead if it’s raining?

Yes, although some of our l ights may notlike the rain and we may have to switch them off. If the rain is torrential, and likely to continue all night, we may have to cancel the event.
